SHARP TREMOR
FELT IN WELLINGTON NO DAMAGE REPORTED P.A. WELLINGTON, Aug. 17. A sharp earth tremor which set electric lights swinging but caused no known damage, was felt in Wellington about .6.45 to-night. It was preceded by a rumbling noise which rapidly increased in volume. The quake was apparently confined to the lower portion of the North Island, as it was not felt in Hastings, and Palmerston North experienced it only slightly. Masterton had a second jolt shortly after 8.30 p.m. of about the same intensity as the first.
