WORKERS’ VIEWS

WIDE DISAPPOINTMENT WATERSIDE SECRETARY’S ■ COMMENT "AN UNANSWERABLE CASE” F.A. WELLINGTON, Aug. 15. “ The workers of New Zealand will be disappointed,” said the secretary of the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union, Mr T. Hill, commenting on the wages decision. “It must be recognised that an unanswerable case was presented by the New Zealand Federation of Labour to prove that the £1 a week demand for all workers could be granted. The further lifting of subsidies will give a clearer indication of the prices of commodities. I am of the opinion that the 10s in'crease granted by the court will not compensate for the- increases that have already taken place in the past seven months. “The Arbitration Court was placed on trial,” Mr Hill said. “The workers had been told by all means of propaganda to pin their faith in arbitration, and now see what has followed the evidence that was presented on their behalf—evidence that clearly, demonstrated that substantial increases in wages were long overdue. “The workers will have to consider some other means •of negotiation if they are to secure a more equitable decision,on their claims.”
