CRAWFORD STREET

Sir, —I have read with interest recent letters on the naming of Crawford street, no, being a great-grandson of the late George Crawford, X feel that I should publish a few facts which I have in my possession, more so to prove that the daughter of George Crawford was not drowned, as previously stated. The following extracts are taken from a copy of the Evening Star, Otago Jubilee edition, dated March 23, 1898. This paper states: Mrs Walsh (nee Crawford) is a native of Aberdeenshire, Scotland; arrived in Otago with her parents (Mr and Mrs George Crawford) by the Philip Lang on April 15, 1848. She resided in Dunedin with her parents for some time, when she married William Walsh, an A. 8., who also came to Otago on board the Philip Lang. William Walsh purchased land at Green Island and took to farming Later selling his property, he moved to Shag Valley, where he died. Mrs Walsh resides there at the present time and has a family of 12 children. Mrs Walsh says in a note to us: "I may state here that Crawford street, Dunedin, was named after my father, Gecrre Crawford! When discussing the plat-.' of Dunedin with his Honor James Macandrew, then the Superintendent of Otago, he saw the street and asked its name. Mr Macandrew replied: ’lt has no name, George, but we will soon alter that.’ So he wrote, ‘ Crawford street ’ along the vacant space, saying, ‘ You see that is easily settled, George.’ ” —I am, etc., • Tlios. It. Welsh. Moeraki, August 11.
