STILL HOLDING OUT

JAPANESE NAVAL MEN SMALL FORCE ON GUAM I- GUAM, Aug. 13. Two years after Emperor Hirohito’s rescript ordering the Japanese to cease fighting, upwards of 20 Japanese naval men are still holed up in Guam’s north-west end. American Army authorities said it would take 1000 marines six months to clear the Japanese from their series of caves hidden by dense undergrowth in a 500-foot cliff. Occasional small calibre shots are heard. in the area, but no American personnel have been hit so far. The Japanese apparently are suffering no serious food or water shortages. The cliff contains many springs, and bananas, pawpaws, and breadfruit .grow plentifully in the jungle at its foot. Small deer, also are numerous.
