PUBLIC WORKS ACTIVITY ROAD IMPROVEMENTS IN OTAGO An impetus has been given to public works activity throughout the province by the employment of a number of men who have been released from seasonal work. No major constructional works are in hand, but several strips of highway are being prepared for sealing. Tenders have been called for the metalling and sealing of the Clarks-ville-Waitahuna portion of the Central Otago highway, a distance of 13 miles. At present, the district engineer, Mr C. Langbein, told the Daily Times yesterday, 30 men who are employed on this stretch are stationed at a camp at Lawrence. It is planned to use this camp as the base for further operations on Central Otago roads. The contractors have begun work on the nine miles of road between Ettrick and Island Block, and still further on another contractor is carrying out work between Gorge Creek and Alexandra with a view to having this strip sealed. Between Frankton and Queenstown a few of the department’s men are employed in getting the road ready for the holiday traffic later in the year. On the unsealed portion of the Dun-edin-Gore State highway, between Clinton and Arthurton, work is at present retarded by a lack of manpower. Only a' small number of men are employed in this district.
