WORK ON FOSSILS WHALES AND PENGUINS PLANS OF PROFESSOR MARPLES Important research arising out of his discoveries at Duntroon of ' the fossils of whales and penguins is to be undertaken by Professor B. J. Marples, head of the Department of Zoology in the University of Otago, when he sails next week for New York and the UnitedKingdom. Professor Marples’s discoveries aroused world-wide interest in scientific circles, and'one of his objects in the course of his tour will be to collate his findings with those of other scientists working in the same field. In New York he will be conferring with Dr George. G. Simpson, of the American Museum of Natural History, who has done valuable research in fossils, and has led expeditions in fos-

sil animal discoveries in Texas, New Mexico, and other American States, in Argentina, Venezuela, and other Latin American countries, and has published works on the ' early fossil mammals in the British Museum. Dr Simpson has also found fossil penguins. Professor Marples will have only a brief time in ‘New York, whence he will proceed direct to London, where he will be engaged chiefly in research at the British. Museum. He intends also to visit Brussels, where the museum offers interesting fossil material, including whales, for study, and Antwerp. He is'sailing by the. Rangitiki, and expects to be absent from the Dominion for about three months.
