BRIGHT BOXING

ANNUAL TOURNAMENT CHRISTIAN BROTHERS’ HIGH SCHOOL Boxing patrons with an appreciation of science and the finer points, and those whose enthusiasms are dictated largely by the degree of willingness of the contestants, were both adequately served by the Christian Brothers Boys' High School tournament, held in the Town Hall for the first time last night. Twenty-six bouts were fought in just over two and a-half nours. The success of the tournament from a competitive point of view was undoubtedly due to the competence of Mr A. Goodmap as a boxmg instructor. His insistence on his pupils learning tl\orcughly the fundamentals of the art in their comparatively tender years has, paid dividends, if the quality of their displays last night is to be regarded as a criterion. The lads were both keen and willing, but except in a few cases where temperament, mastered instruction, the boxing was academic in the best sense of the word. Though none of the bouts was ended by a knock-out, not one was dull, and although some of the midget competitors provided more amusement than excitement, the tournament throughout was a success from all standpoints. The tournament was held under the auspices of .the Otago Boxing Association. Mr J. A. Kilmartin was M.C., Messrs V. Parker, S. Paris, R. M. Morris, J. A Galbraith, C. E. Brown, S. Brown, and A. G.‘ Edwards were the referees and judges, and Messrs H. W. Cockerill and T. Long were the timekeepers, The bouts were each of three oneminute rounds. The following are the detailed results:— School Championship B. McKay beat R. Roskilly on points. McKay carried the fight to Roskilly from the opening bell. His opponent could not judge his distance properly until the middle of the second round, when he began to come more into his own with left and right crosses. In the closing stages McKay ‘ was scoring points with left rips and right crosses, and carried the decision by a comfortable margin. Seniors W. King beat J. Stichbury on points. The bout opened at whirlwifid pace, with the result that neither contestant connected cleanly. Stichbury landed some heavy right crosses in the second round, but King’s cleaner work and general excellent defence gave him the decision. L. Coote beat W. Phillips on points.Compared with Philips’s two-fisted energetic attack, Coote concentrated coolly throughout the first two rounds on placing his punches with telling effect. Only in the final round did he step up the pace to rattle Phillips with heavy left and right swings that left him groggy. J. Fitzgerald beat P. Coory on a technical knock-out. Coory spent the/first round ineffectually swinging for Fitzgerald’s head In the second, Fitzgerald had his measure, and abandoned defence for attack to place punishing straight lefts and right crosses through Coory’s wide guard. D. La Hood beat E. Gibb on points. La Hood did the majority of the leading, and in the first two rounds Gibb managed to avoid the majority of his punches.by judicious guarding. La Hood broke through his defence finally early In the third round, and piled up points with left and rights to the head. R. Ferris beat B. Kelly. An interesting bout ended in the second round, when Kelly injured his ankle and was unable to carry on. P. McCombe beat J. Spiers on points.
