WORK FOR PRISONERS
MR C. B. BURDEKIN’S RETURN P.A. WELLINGTON, Aug. 4. “ It is indeed a rare occasion when a civic welcome is extended to a New Zealander returning to his own country,” the Mayor of Wellington, Mr W. Appleton, said to-day when extending an official welcome to Mr C. B. Burdekin. Mr Appleton referred- to the excellent work Mr Burdekin had dotne for war prisoners and was supported in his remarks by the Minister of Defence, Mr Jones, who said that at one stage Mr Burdekin had been “ godfather” to 8900 New Zealanders who were held as prisoners of war.
