CONTROLLER STATUS
WOMAN IN 8.8. C. The first woman in British broadcasting to rise to controller status, the highest rank attainable, is Miss Mary Somerville. Miss Somerville, who was born in New Zealand while her parents were visiting the Dominion, was until recently - Director of 8.8. C. School Broadcasting, with which she has been associated since .1924. At present she is visiting the United States and Australia where she is to speak and advise on school broadcasting. Her work as director of this most important side of the British Broadcasting Corporation’s activities has made the programmes for schools among the best in broadcasting, and they are listened to not only by pupils, but also by adults.
