LOSS OF STOCK

WAIRARAPA FLOODS RELIEF COMMITTEE SET UP P.A. WELLINGTON, July 3. While the full position would not be disclosed until, the flood waters had receded from all the farms, a preliminary estimate of the stock losses in the Wairarapa would be about 9000 sheep and 300 head of cattle, said the Assistant Director-general of Agriculture, Mr R. B. Tennent, to-night. Mr Tennent visited the district to-day to assist in the setting up of a committee to help the settlers. From a national point of view, the losses were not as serious as had. been expected earlier, said Mr Tennent but he did not want to minimise the grievous losses suffered by individual farmers. The settlers in the flooded were showing an exceptionally fine spirit and were gettinc down to the iob of repairing the t damage. Mr Tennent said the aim of the committee would be to give the speediest assistance possible. It would function 1 through the Department of Agriculture in co-operation with the Federated Farmers.
