NOTABLE RECORD
Neil Williams, who has been chosen for the New Zealand soccer trials, has the notable distinction of having represented Otago at soccer, indoor basketball, water polo, and swimming. He is captain of the Caversham Association Football Club, and during the past two sea-
sons captained the Dunedin Amateur Swimming Club’s water polo team as well as the Otago team, holders of the New Zealand champiopship. He was captain of the South Island water polo team which defeated the North Island at Nelson in February, and was a member of the winning Otago flying squadron relay swimming team. Last year he was selected as a New Zealand indoor basketball representative.
POSITIONAL PLAY IN HOCKEY Last Saturday’s matches in the women’s competitions exhibited striking examples of the advantages of sound coaching in positional play. In the main match on the Oval between King’s and Training College, the King’s players were always in position to intercept clearing hits by the College backs and yet at the same time covered the field well to avoid awkward gaps in defence. The College full-backs, probably dispirited by an early lead against them, were content to defend from the circle, not realising that by so doing they were giving possession of a large proportion of the field to their opponents. In striking contrast, the King’s defenders played well up and were able to put the opposing forwards off side Again, in the A2 Grade match between Otago and University, the forwards of the latter team failed to realise that their opponents were playing one short in the defence and that off-side positions were inevitable unless different policies were adopted
VETERANS FOREGATHER During the interval at the English Trophy final there was a reunion of many fine ex-Otago players in front of the grandstand. They were A. Hooper. Simmons G. Anderson. Hanlin.
'• Billie ” Murray. W. Chapman (New Zealand selector). H. Balk, S. Duncan, J Campbell. Milne, and J. McDougall. The indications given by their feet and heads suggested that they were playing some of their epic struggles over again.
PORT CHALMERS COACH The announcement that Mr W. G. Lindsay was the coach of the Port Chalmers Rugby team was not strictly correct. The side is coached by Mr J. Potter, and Mr Lindsay has assisted by lecturing the team on two nights
