Ancient Silver Pennies Found in Sandpit
Special Correspondent. Rec. 7.30 p.m. LONDON, June 4. Silver pennies at least 700 years old have been found by 14-year old George Willetts in a sandpit at Clifton, near Manchester, where mechanical diggers and a bulldozer have been continuously operated. There were 71 coins, some made in London and others in Canterbury, Winchester and Wilton in the time of Henry II or Henry HI, and it has been decided by a coroner and jury that they are treasure and thus become the property of the Crown. The boy was out for a walk when he found.the coins. He was sitting on the edge of the sandpit swinging his legs when lie saw some purplish discs which turned out to be pure silver and which were identified by the Curator of coins at the Manchester University Museum. The finders of treasure trove are usually compensated by the Home Office.
