Ministerial The Minister of Defence, Mr Jones, left Dunedin for Wellington by air yesterday morning Mr Gordon' Bell will leave to-day to attend the conference of the Royal Australasion College of Surgeons, in Melbourne. He is expected to return in two weeks’ time. Messrs *M. Connelly. M.L.C., J. H. F. Hamill, J. W. Dove, A. Steel and A. •Thomas will leave on Monday to represent the Dunedin Savings Bank at the centennial celebrations of the Auckland ■ Savings Bank on Tuesday and Wednesday next. Mr P. J. Twomey, of the Lepers’ Trust Board has been appointed director, the position of- secretary being filled by Mr Owen T. Scully, of Christchurch. Since the board meeting, Mr Twomey has been admitted to Lewisham Hospital for treatment. but hopes soon to resume duty. At the conference of members of the Otago Cricket Association and country delegates last night, the opportunity was taken to present to Messrs W. A. Hadlee and B. Sutcliffe bats which were given by Mr W. R. Brinsley in recognition of the outstanding performances of both players against the M.C.C. team last season. The presentation was made by the president of the association. Mr J. A. Robson.

Leary, tendered the congratulations of the association to Mr John Clarke, of Dunedin, on celebrating his ninetv-thtrd birthday on Tuesday. Mr Leary said thal Mr Clarke might be termed the “father’' of the association, and although he was unable to be present, he maintained his interest in its activities. It was decided to send Mr Clarke birthday greetings from the association, together with a letter of appreciation of his work in the organisation over a long period of years.
