GOOD FULL-BACK DISPLAY
A first-class display was given by the Southern full-back, J. W. Paterson, in the match against Port Chalmers last Saturday. Paterson saved his side time after time and sent the opposition back with lengthy clearing kicks. His fielding of the ball was flawless, and he repeatedly gathered in a rolling ball in the face of the Port forwards and cleared with accurate kicks with either foot. Pater-
son was not called on to do much in the way of tackling, but his fielding and kicking were of the' highest standard, and frequently earned the applause of the large crowd which saw the match. Paterson is a fine all-round sportsman, and last season was captain of the New Zealand men’s basketball team, while he is the holder of the Otago Lawn Tennis Championship. He was a prisoner of war for several years.
