WOMEN’S HOCKEY

The number of youthful players appearing on the Oval and Logan Park each Saturday augurs well for the future of women’s hockey in Otago. Secondary schools alone have 12 teams in the B Grade competitions, while other clubs have 15 teams in these grades. The standard of junior hockey has improved considerably, probably owing to some extent to the fact that Otago Girls’ High School, Technical College Columba and St, Hilda’s Colleges all have A Grade hockey players as sports mistresses. In charge of hockey at High School is Miss B. Sparrow, at Technical College Miss D. Stinson, at Columba Miss N. Gourley and at St. Hilda’s Miss J. Fraser. To a greater extent than previously promoted juniors have been prominent in the senior grade this year and this should encourage younger players to improve their game. B Grade players have a further incentive to excel as the Otago Women’s Hockey Association arranges a junior representative game each season.
