TOP-WEIGHT IN BIRTHDAY
Joygiver’s Performances MAY IMPROVE DURING MEETING Joygiver, the topweight in the Birthday Handicap with 9.4,- was not started in the same race last season, but on the third-day of the meeting he registered a fine performance to win the King George Handicap, of one mile, with 9.7, in heavy going, the place-getters being Platform 9.7 and Tring 7.12. This season the Man’s Pal five-year-old has been started 13 times for one win and six placings. His two most recent races were at the Riverton meeting at Easter. On the second day, with 8.9, he finished second to Salmon Spear 7.4 in the Easter Handicap of one mile and a-quarter, and on the third day, carrying 9.2. he finished third to. Salmon Spear 8.1 and Sea Power 8.4 in the Fiord Handicap, of one mile. ' Joygiver, who was got from the speedy Caterpillar, by Paper Money from Tortrix, by Martian from Tortulla, was started in the last New Zealand Cup, which would suggest that his connections had no reason to doubt his stamina. So far he has shown his best form in races up to a mile and a-quarter, but the extra two furlongs of the Birthday Handicap should not trouble him. G. A. McKay has Joygiver looking well, and should not have to wait very long before putting him on the winning list again.
