Final Announcement in the REID & GRAY Plough - Setting Service to Farmers .•SST— ‘ • a Be) « ■v "V PLOUGH RUNS "OFF" THE LAND The probable causes are: — (a) Not sufficient land on shares or leg. (b) Shares worn. (c) Skeith blade worn thick or inserted wrong way round. The straight edge should always be on the land side and the bevelled edge on the furrow side. (Blades to-day are bevelled equally on both sides, and this problem does not arise.) (d) Wheels not running sufficiently to land. (e) Drawbar of plough yoked too far to land on bridle and/or too close to the furrow on tractor. The tvheels may have sufficient land, but if heads and shares lack enough dip, there is not adequate pressure on the icheels to give sufficient grip to follow the direction at which they are set. This defect can be countered to a certain extent by lengthening the drawbar and raising the bridle. HEAVY DRAUGHT The possible causes of heavy draught are very numerous. The following are the most likely ones:— (a) Beams or legs bent (b) Too rpuch dip on shares. I (c) Too .much land. (d) plough being pulled too much to land at drawbar. (e) Short, abrupt mouldboards. (f) Rear wheel above level of share or shares, causing the mouldboards to sledge on the bottom of the furrow. (g) Plough not running on " even keel." This, of course, is due to a fault in the setting of the wheel levels, and it has been mentioned in an earlier announcement that, if the front and rear wheels are set above the level of the point of the shares, the draught of the plough is increased very considerably. It may be noted here that a strong, heavy plough properly set is easier to pull than a light plough even slightly bent. There is a lot more to the subject of plough-setting than we have been able to discuss in this limited series of announcements, and we strongly recommend that every ploughman should have at hand our wellknown plough-setting guide: “ The Technique of Plough-settingPrice 1/6, which fully explains the whole vast subject of plough-setting.
