CHRISTCHURCH HIGH SCHOOL

PROPOSED WAR MEMORIAL At a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Otago branch of the Christchurch High School Old Boys’ Association on Monday night arrangements were completed for the holding of the annual reunion dinner on Wednesday, July 16. This day marks the occasion of the annual Rugby match in Christchurch between the first fifteens from the rival schools, Christ's College and Boys’ High School. On this occasion, too, old boys in Otago will have the opportunity of welcoming Brigadier J. T. Burrows, and members can look forward to an interesting address from him. An invitation has also been extended to another old boy, Major-gene-ral H. P. Kippenberger. The chairman (Mr L. H. Beardsley), who recently attended the annual general meeting of the parent association in Christchurch, reported on the proposed war memorial at the school for those old boys who made the supreme, sacrifice m World War 11. In view of the fact that the school possessed a magnificent shrine to the memory of the old boys of World War I, it had been decided to add to this by placing memorial panels at the entrance to the assembly hall. These panels would be in native woods, with the names of the men engraved, and the boys of succeeding generations at the school will see them daily. In addition, a panel will contain a permanent record of the names, hand printed on vellum and bound in leather, of all those who served overseas. On the dais of the assembly hall, among others, a special memorial chair with suitable engraved silver plates will be installed by the old boys in Otago in memory of two members of the local branch who were killed, Pilot Officer P. Trolove and Lieutenant W. N. Wood. The committee has assured the school of its support to the extent of £75, and will shortly appeal to all old boys resident in Otago.
