ANTARCTIC RESOURCES
EXPLOITATION BY AMERICA ADMIRAL BYRD’S SUGGESTION Rec. 10 p.m. NEW YORK Apl. 14. “Within 25 years we could go after the resources in Antarctica,” said Rear-admiral R. E. Byrd when interviewed upon his return from his fourth Antarctic expedition. “ There is a great amount of coal there and nobody knows what other resources may
lie hidden under the ice.” He also suggested exploiting the vast icecap as a natural refrigerator for the storage of surplus crops in bumper years. Rear-admiral Byrd added that he had not yet decided whether to recommend official United States action toward establishing part of the Antarctic as American territory.
