BRITISH CYCLE TRADE

ORDER TO REDUCE PRODUCTION According to advice received by an Oamaru cycle dealer, Britain’s cycle industry, which last year exported a record "figure of £6,500,000, has been informed by the British Board of Trade it must reduce production by 75 per cent. The reason for the cut was stated to be the acute shortage of steel, and this reduction of output is expected to mean the virtual disappearance of new bicycles from the home market. Apart from the disruption to the industry the cut means the dismissal or reduction to short time of thousands of workers, a threat to the businesses of small dealers, and the. abandonment of plans for extending the export trade to the Far East.
