SIXTY YEARS’ SERVICE
MR H. L. SMITH'S RECORD EMPLOYED BY ONE FIRM Sixty years’ experience with one firm is the record that has been achieved by Mr H. L. Smith, manager of the Dunedin branch of P. Hayman and Company. Born and educated at Waikouaiti, he joined the company s staff in March, 1887. In 1921 Mr Smith was promoted to the position of sub-manager A year later he was transferred to to hold the equivalent position there and in 1924 he returned to this city to be manager of the Dunedin brancir of the company, a position he still k°ln S an interview with the Daily Times yesterday Mr Smith said that work was hard to obtain 60 years ago and he had to wait two months before starting in his first position. The wages would be scorned by young people to-day, but the hours he worked 41J hours spread over six davs compared favourably with those at present.- . Mr Smith has taken a full share in the commercial life of -Dunedin. He has served terms on the council of • the Chamber of Commerce, and is also a past president of the Otago Importers and Shippers’ Association.
