WAGE INCREASES
EFFECT ON HARBOUR BOARDS HIGHER CHARGES NECESSARY Referring to the proposed application by the Federation of Labour to the Arbitration Court for a general wage increase of £1 a week, a letter received at a meeting of the Otago Harbour Board last night from the Harbours’ Association included a suggestion that harbour boards should submit through the association any applications for increased charges which might be found necessary. There was no doubt, said the chairman, Mr W. R. Clarke, that some increased charges would be necessary. Mr J. G. Jeffery: Are we not sup-, posed to absorb these Wage increases?
The chairman: I do not see how we can. We are sailing pretty close to the wind now.
The suggestion contained in the letter was approved. .
