CANDIDATES FOR OTAUTAU Special to the Daily- Times INVERCARGILL, Mar. 20. Horses with engagements at the Otautau meeting on Saturday provided most interest in training operations at Invercargill this morning. The course proper, with the poles 20 feet out, was open, but most use was made of the plough. The tracks are hard and fast and there was little outstanding work. Benbecula .and Salmon Spear finished together at the end of a mile in lmin 47 4-ssec, coming home the last half in 54 3-ssec. Both were doing their, work within themselves. Haughty Dick shaded String Band over half a mile in 50 l-ssec—a good effort. Both these novices promise to show up at Otautau on Saturday. Pal and Starlee were together at the end of a mile in lmin 52sec. There was no pace on over the early part, but they came home the last half in ,53sec and did it well. ‘ Irish Fighter and Red Money took 55 l-ssec for half a mile, finishing together. Solver and Aganev went away from the mile, and after running the first four in 51 2-ssec, they completed the journey in lmin 51sec. They were stopping at the finish. Geisha Girl was not troubled to run five furlongs in lmin 8 l-ssec, the last four in 53 4-ssec. Salad and Some Sal reeled off five furlongs in lmin 6 2-ssec, coming home the last half in 53 l-ssec. Debater and Diamond Duke completed a mile in lmin 49 3-ssec, the last half in 55 3-ssec, finishing together. Rhine Lord rah an easy mile In Imm 56 2-ssec, coming home the last four in 53 2-ssec Bonny Royal and Secret Course took lmin 23sec for six, the last four in 55 Red Prize and Siegtone hit out in good style in running a mile in lmin 49 4-ssec. They finished on terms, the last half in 52 '3-ssec. Sing Sing Breaks Down Sing Sing broke down badly while working during the week. The trouble is thought to be a cracked pelvis, and she has been put in a sling. It is hoped to save her for the stud, as she has been booked to Royal Chief next season. Sing Sing was one of the first of Salmagundi s stock to race and she is now eight years old. She was unbeaten as a three-year-old winning in her four appearances. She contested 72 races foi; 10 successes. 28 placings and £4192 10s in stakes
