MEETING OPENING ON SATURDAY

The Oamaru Jockey Club, which holds good prospects of a successful meeting on Saturday ar\d Monday next, has experienced some ups and downs in the past in its efforts to cater for the sport. In bygone years the club was on the verge of extinction owing., to the poor patronage accorded the meetings, but it struggled on, and a share in the proceeds of an art union provided the means of enriching the stakes. Reconstruction of the course and the erection of new stands led to much better patronage from the public, and so did the linkingup with the Oamaru Trotting Club, as both clubs have fared well since the semi-amalgamation. //'lt is a matter of regret that the racing club reduced'the circumference of the race track from about a mile and a-quarter to about a mile. The progressive policy adopted by the club has, however, brought about a period of success which augurs well for future operations.
