FIRE RISKS

BRIGADESMEN CRITICAL BUILDINGS BELOW STANDARD P.A. AUCKLAND, Mar. 17. Many New Zealand buildings were not all that might b.e desired from the viewpoint of fire risk, said Superintendent L. 0. Wallis,., of Gore, presiding at the opening of the annual conference of the United Fire Brigades’ Association of New Zealand to-day. “We are looking for trouble if we do not do something,to overcome this,” he said. It was the responsibility of brigades to ensure that inspections were made and faults remedied. Referring to the importance of preventing the destruction of homes, Mr Wallis said the onus was on smaller brigades to improve conditions, so that firemen would remain on the station, ensuring a quick despatch of machines when a call was received. Control of the United Fire Brigades Association of New Zealand was debated in committee. A motion was passed expressing confiderice in the executive, and stating that the .executive should be given the only right to deal with the Inspector-General of Fire Brigades and any other interested body in all matters concerning a national fire service.
