WAIHEMO COUNTY

MEETING OF COUNCIL At the monthly meeting of the Walhemo County Council, held at Palmerston, the chairman, Cr Peddie, presided, and there were also present Crs G. Ross, H. S. Sheat, W. Ritchie, A. Purvis. W. Matheson, D. J. Ireland, and P. M. Heffernan. The ranger’s report stated that six cattle and one horse were found wandering on the roads during the month. The Bay of Islands County Council asked support for the enactment of legislation to establish a national authority for the issue of debt-free finance for county councils. This debateable issue, the council could not suport, but was in favour of a lower rate of interest and larger subsidy on any approved capital expenditure. The application by Mrs E. Ellis for culvert and entrance to her house section was granted. The District Engineer, Public Works Department, Dunedin, advised that the replacement of the Glenpark swing bridge destroyed in the September flood, with a heavy traffic bridge, had been carefully considered, but in view of the shortages of materials and labour and large number of bridges that required immediate renewal on main and State highways in the Otago area, the proposal to erect this heavy-traffic bridge should be deferred. He considered • tire area at Glenpark was well served with bridges and roading. Successful tenderers for sole right to cut cocksfoot were: Green Valley and Bushey, James Kitchen; Blue Mountain, John McKean; Dunback, W. Pullar; Meadowbank, R. A. Kitchen; Goodwood, K. Hore.

No objections being received, the application by O'Connell estate to fence and erect gate on Pound road was granted at the pleasure of the council. One building permit of £420 was granted. 1 Accounts amounting to £987 15s 9d were passed for payment.
