GOLF AT ROTORUA

PROPOSED NEW LINKS If about 100 acres of reserve land alongside the existing Arikikapakapa links can be acquired from the Government, a second 18-hole golf course of full championship standards will be constructed by the Rotorua Golf Club. Spread across easy rolling country, with ideal golfing contours, the proposed site includes the thickly overgrown Arikikapakapa reserve and a scrub-covered area on the opposite side of the old Taupo road. ■ Increased provision for golfers is among the most urgent of Rotorua’s post-war tourist needs. Although visiting players are restricted to members of recognised clubs in New Zealand or abroad, a rigid system of starting times has to be maintained during the season from March to December, and visitors for whom golf is an attractive feature of a Rotorua holiday are often unable to secure a round. Over £2OOO was collected in green fees by the club last year, and more than 300 players have been seen on the course during a single Sunday. Besides meeting a growing demand, a second course of full championship standard at Rotorua would be an important addition to the Dominion’s roster. The proposal has been supported by the Rotorua Borough Council, and if the club is given a satisfactory tenure of the land by the Government, work on the new course will begin almost immediately. A NEW DEPARTMENT R. G. Pilling (University) tried himself out in another department of athletics on Saturday, when he secured second place in the hammer-throwing event, in addition to which he won the 100 Yards and was third in the 440 Yards.,, Pilling was formerly New Zealand University champion in the Hop, Step, and Jump and Broad Jump, and is the present provincial champion in the former event. He is a. very versatile athlete, and has represented in other branches of sport. He won the 14-Mile Modified Marathon a few years ago, and on the track he was a good-class sprinter and middle-distance performer, being at one time the holder of the Milne Cup for most points in middle distances. He was also an able exponent of throwing the javelin. Pilling took part in the shot-putting on Saturday, in which, with an v actual effort of just under 30ft, he was beaten into fifth place. f _
