HALLYBURTON JOHNSTONE , SHIELD AUCKLAND’S GOOD RECOVERY P.A. WELLINGTON, Jan. 22. A fine recovery after seven wickets had fallen for 126 runs, with the captain, H. Thompson, playing a leading role, saw Auckland gain a first-innings lead over Wellington in the second day’s play of the interprovincial women’s cricket match for the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield to-day. Wellington added . only one run to. its overnight score of 198 for nine wickets when play resumed. Three players dominated Auckland’s innings—V. Robinson, who batted very solidly for 40, H. Thompson, who played a good captain’s knock for 81, and E. Simmonds, who assisted Miss Thompson in a lucrative eighth-wicke.t partnership which added 68 runs and took the score to within five runs of Wellington’s total, thus paving the way for a first innings lead of 17 runs. Miss Thompson was dropped when at 30—a costly miss for Wellington—otherwise she gave no chances, showing sound judgment in her scoring shots and being content largely to wait for a loose balk At stumps, Wellington had lost one wicket for 36 runs in the second innings.
