She finished only half a head behind Song Bird. Calumella is an aged bay mare by Calumet Axworth from First Wrack, by Wrack from Pearlchild, by Rothschild from Verity, by Vancleve. Brother to Plunder Bar West Point, a four-year-old brother to Plunder Bar and Indigo, carried heavy support in the Wakanui Handicap at Ashburton, and is apparently close to winning form. One of M. C. F. J. Smith had Great Belwin In great condition for Auckland, and after hard races on the first two days the Worthy Belwin gelding - came up bright for two solid efforts on a holding track on the third day. He scored a well-deserved success in the President’s Handicap, and it was surprising that he was not a strong first choice after his second placings in the Cup and Champion Handicap. Great Belwin made a game effort to win the double, but Loyal Nurse had the edge on him at the finish of the Premier Handicap.
