APPOINTMENT OF DIRECTOR TWELVE APPLICATIONS RECEIVED Twelve applications, all from Great Britain, have been received for the apointment of director of cancer research in and these are now being considered by a special committee. Applications closed on December 31. The recommendations of this committee will be forwarded to the Central Committee in Wellington. It is expected that the name of the successful aplicant will be announced at an early date. The new director /will be in charge, of the Cancer Research Department and laboratories which will be housed in the new block of the Medical School. He will require a number of assistants, but they will not be appointed until after his arrival in Dunedin. Certain basic equipment for the department has been ordered, but the special equipment required will not be obtained until the new director has been consulted. Since 1929 a small department studying cancer has been in existence at the Otago Medical School, but some years ago its director, Dr A. M. Begg, went to Britain, and is now engaged at the Imperial Cancer Research Fynd’s laboratory in London. The New Zealand branch .of the British Cancer Campaign Society has been contributing to the British funds since Dr Begg joined the staff of the London laboratory, but now that a new director is to be appointed to the Cancer Department at the Otago Medical School the contribution will cease and be diverted to research work in Dunedin. Already a great deal has been achieved by the various research departments at the Otago Medical School and the appointment of a director of cancer research and the. facilities that will be available in the new block will no dqubt give a further fiillip to research in Dunedin.
