CROSSING SMASH

MOTOR TRUCK WRECKED OCCUPANTS’ FORTUNATE ESCAPE A three-ton lorry travelling to Dunedin collided with a mixed goods and passenger train passing through Warrington to Dunedin about 7 o’clock last night. The truck was extensively damaged and the driver, Mr E. Little, of Warrington, and a boy passenger both had a remarkable escape from injury. The collision occurred at the level crossing near the Anglican church at the north of Warrington, where the railway line takes a sharp bend. The truck, with a load of milk cans, was carried about 100 yards by the train, and was wrecked. One wheel remained at the point of impact, but the truck smashed the cattle stop as it swept along. The radiator was knocked from the chassis, but the cab was not seriously damaged, and Mr Little, the boy, and a dog inside it climbed out without having been injured.

The engine suffered only minor damage, and after backing off from the lorry, the train was able to resume its journey to Dunedin.
