ACTION ENDORSED
EXECUTIVE OF UNION (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 7.. With their working conditions impaired only by the loss of contract bonuses, Auckland watersiders started work at 9 o’clock this morning after a stop-work meeting which endorsed the action of the executive of the union. Although the shipping companies were again notified that the union would not depart from the 40-hour week, the men were again called upon to work to-night. They refused, and no call was made for non-union labour to man the ships. There were no negotiations between the union and the shipowners before work started. Shipping officials said it was most unlikely that wages and conditions would be. altered. There was no point in doing so, and any attempt would aggravate the situation. The usual pay day will be observed to-morrow for the week ended last Sunday, and wages for work on Monday and to-day will not be paid until next week.
