DEMAND FOR TILES
AFTERMATH OF HAILSTORM DISTRIBUTION CONTROLLED (Rec. 11 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 6. The State Government to-day took action to prevent black-marketing in tiles following the keen demand which has resulted from the unsettled weather after last Wednesday’s damaging hailstorm. From to-morrow, all tiles will go direct from the manufacturers to suburban councils, which will issue them to homes damaged by the hail. The Minister of Labour and Industry, Mr Hamilton Knight, said that the decision followed a conference of tile manufacturers and councils. Delivery from the council yards to the householders will be a matter of local arrangement. The action resulted when reports that black-market operators were hawking tiles in affected areas and selling them at 2s-each were found to be true. Heavy rain early on Sunday has almost doubled the damage by the leakage of rain through broken roofs.
