FIRST SUCCESS

MISS NGAIRE LANE WINS FAST TIME RECORDED (Rec. 9 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 5. Swimming competitively in Australia for me first time, the New Zealand champion, Miss Ngaire Lane, made a great impression in the New South Wales Women’s Championships at the Coogee Aquarium. She won the Invitation 55 Yards Backstroke race unextended in 37sec, beating last year’s State backstroke champion, Miss M. Stevenson, by two yards. The tall New Zealander moved away from the start and with an effortless stroke continued to increase her lead There is no State record for the distance but officials rated the time as among the best in recent years. Miss Lane said afterwards that it was the first time she had ever swum that distance. She felt strange and thought she could have done better She developed a heavy cold soon after her arrival in Australia and had had only two training swims.
