RESCUE EFFORTS

EXPRESSION OF APPRECIATION (P.A.) WELLINGTON. Jan. 4. Appreciation of the efforts of all the rescuers in the recovery of the injured trampers in the glacier accident was expressed by the Minister of Tourist and Health Resorts, Mr Parry, who forecast that the pending installation of radios in such isolated spots would in the near future enable such rescue work to be materially speeded up. The climbers on holiday in the area who so willingly co-operated with the officers of the Tourist Department, the police, and other officials, had displayed the true spirit of unselfishness. “Although it appears in this particular case that the party was as well equipped as could be desired, and was capably led, I should like to repeat a warning against any party of climbers undertaking arduous trips in isolated country without sufficient preparation and experience behind them." said the Minister. The recent tragedy appears to have been just one more of those unavoidable hazards of mountaineering which occasionally strike even the most experienced parties.”
