POLICE COMPETENT

INTOXICATION TESTS MAGISTRATE’S OPINION (P.A.) NAPIER, Jan. 4. The opinion that police officers are as competent as doctors to carry out tests on intoxicated motorists was expressed in the Magistrate’s Court by Mr J. Miller, S.M., in convicting Nish Newport, aged 24, of intoxication while in charge of a motor vehicle. A doctor who examined the accused an hour after the accident had given evidence that, while the accused had consumed liquor, he did not consider him in an unfit state to drive. Evidence was given by six police officers to the effect that Newport was in a condition of intoxication when questioned at the police station, and that he did n°t respond like a sober man to the usual tests. “With all their experience I believe police officers are as competent as doctors to carry out these tests,” commented the* magistrate. He added that, in respect to the test, the doctor's evidence was inconclusive. A fine of £2O was imposed.
