SOUTH ISLAND TITLES BOLD WINS MEN'S SINGLES (PA.) TIMARU, Jan. 2. The South Island tennis championships were concluded to-day, when 0. Bold (Hutt Valley) beat R. Howe (Christchurch) in the final of the Men’s Singles 6—l, 6—2, 6—2. The game was disappointing, Howe being unable to find touch with his drives. In the semi-final against S. Painter (Wellington), Howe played an excellent game, being a model of accuracy in all departments.In the final of the Women’s Singles, Miss M. Snelling, fifth ranked in Wellington, had a convincing win over Miss E. Attwood (Auckland), second ranked in New Zealand, 6—3, 7—5. Following good ground shots into the net, Miss. Snelling displayed brilliant volleying" and smashing ability. Bold and Painter outclassed R. Patr tinson and Howe, both of Canterbury, in the Men’s Doubles final. Although they dropped the second set 3—6, they were never in any real danger, winning 9—7, 3—6, 6—l, 6—l. Bold was outstanding, volleying and smashing with marked consistency. Misses T. Poole (Canterbury) and Snelling won the Women’s Doubles from Misses M. Adam (South Canterbury) and M. Robertson (Otago) 2—6, 6— 2. 6—3. This game reached a high standard, the winners displaying the better knowledge of doubles play.
