OCEAN YACHT RACE

BERMUDAN CUTTER WINS VALUABLE PRIZES SECURED (Rec. 10.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 2. The Bermudan cutter, Christina, of Sydney, crossed the finishing line this morning to win the Sydney-Hobart yacht race. She was actually the eighth yacht to finish, but her arrival well within her handicap time put the issue beyond doubt. Second in the race on the adjusted times was the sloop Sage, which arrived in Hobart last night, and the cutter Morna, winner of the unrestricted section, was third. Christina won the handicap race because her crew drove her / through a gale which caused bigger boats to heave-to. The result of the race was a triumph for Sydney contestants, as Sydney boats occupied all three places and also were first, second and third across the line. Christina will receive the George Adams Tattersalls Cup, valued at £BOO, and a cash award of £IOO given by the Tasmanian Government. By noon to-day eight yachts had reached Hobart, and five more were reported in Stormy Bay, near the finish, in a very light breeze. Three others have been disabled and have withdrawn. The five yachts near the finish are presumed to be the New Zealander, Ilex, Kalua, Sirius, Wayfarer and Kurrewa. A plane search has been ordered for Merlan, Trade Wind and Unis J., which have not been sighted since Saturday. The search is' merely a precautionary measure, as at this stage no anxiety is felt for the crews.
