OTAGO v. NORTH OTAGO “HAT TRICK” BY V. McARLEY Otago was in an almost unassailable position at the conclusion of the first day’s play in the match against North Otago, which was commenced at Carisbrook yesterday, and will be continued to-day. The home side registered the good total of 280, but against the accurate bowling of V. McArley and E. Watson, North Otago gave a mediocre display of batting and collapsed for the paltry total of 34. no member of the side reaching double figures. The feature of the day’s play was the performance of McArley, who did the “ hat-trick ” in the first innings of North Otago, and finished with the remarkable figures of six wickets for 14, while Watson took four for 16. L. A. Milnes, the Otago captain, won the toss from J. Watson, and sent his side in to bat. The feature of Otago’s batting was a fine partnership between , Milnes and K. Burke, which added 116 for the fourth wicket. Burke, who has been in excellent form in the holiday matches, gave another bright display in scoring 53 in 92 minutes. He appeared well set to carry on for a big score when he was run out. Milnes followed him a few minutes later, being smartly snapped up at the wicket by W. Thomas off M. Buckenham. The Otago captain was top scorer with 61. The side was given a good start by E. Watson and G. Irvine, who put on 31 for the first wicket before Watson was dismissed leg-before-wicket by his North Otago namesake, J. Watson, after scoring 22. Irvine carried on to score 28, and I Payne batted brightly for 33, which were made in 44 minutes, and included three 4’s. He was eventually clean bowled by Buckenham with the second ball of his first over. L. Watson batted soundly for 23. A brisk rate of scoring was maintained throughout, the first 100 coming up in 92 minutes and 200 in 177 minutes. Buckenham, a' Waitaki Boys’ High School player, was the most impressive member of the North Otago attack. Righthand medium pace, he sent down 19.1 overs, including seven maidens, and captured three wickets for 37 runs. Keeping an excellent length and turning the ball appreciably, Buckenham made all the batsmen play him. J. Watson also bowled well, taking three wickets for 46 from 25 overs. The North Otago innings began badly and developed into a procession. McArlev began the debacle when in his fourth over he clean bowled K. Kelk. J. Hall and Buckenham to accomplish the “ hattrick." McArley bowled with plenty of fire, and finished with six wickets for 14 runs from 10.3 overs, five of his victims being clean bowled. E. Watson operated the other end effectively, and maintaining his pace well, helned McArley to dispose of the whole side for 34 The innings occupied only 65 minutes' North Otago followed on. and at stumps had lost one wicket for 18 runs, Campbell and J.
