EXCITING PROSPECTS
GAME WITH CANTERBURY WELLINGTON’S GOOD START (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 1. Prospects of an exciting match are evident at the end of the first day’s play in the Plunket Shield match between Wellington and Canterbury at the Basin Reserve to-day. On what appeared to be an easy wicket, scoring was only moderate. A brilliant innings by D. S. Wilson for 90 after six wickets had fallen for 108 runs saved Wellington from a possible collapse and raised the total to 243. Canterbury began badly, losing three valuable wickets for 30 runs at stumps, including that of I. B. Cromb, who reached 2000 runs in shield cricket in this match. The keen public interest was reflected in the large attendance, the gate takings being £234. The fact that many deliveries came through unexpectedly low at times may have accounted for the moderate scoring and the apparent lack of inspiration in most of the batting. It was a low ball which despatched the former New Zealand representative C. S. Dempster A feature of the Canterbury attack was the effort of J. 1 Parks, the Sussex professional, who sent down 26 overs before being relieved. In vail, he bowled 44 ovefs, 12 being maidens and took three wickets for 79. Scott and Burtt also bowled accurately. Wilson’s 90, his highest score in Plunket Shield cricket, following his excellent bowling and batting against Auckland, stamped him as one of the soundest all-round players at the moment in New Zealand cricket.
