FRENCH ACTIONS IN SAAR BRITAIN SEEKS EXPLANATION (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 3L The British Government has asked . the French for further details of their x Saar action, and a reply is awaited, says the diplomatic writer of The Times. The question turns on whether in fact the French have gone beyond the establishment of the control boundary. There is no doubt, the correspondent points out, that this French move has been made in anticipation of a decision which they hope will be taken in their favour in the peace treaty, but what sort of regime the French envisage for the Saar, should their . wishes ultimately be granted, is not clear. To incorporate the territory in their “ economic and administrative system ” without “ formally annexing it ” savours of a contradiction in terms and some novel constitution will have to be elaborated. The French, it is believed, favour the idea of a High Commissioner who would he a Frenchman.
