CHALLENGE ACCEPTED
WATERSIDERS STAND ‘ FIRM PRIME MINISTER CRITICISED (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 1. Asked to-day for his views on the Government’s ultimatum on the waterfront dispute, the national president of the Waterside Workers’ Union, Mr H. Barnes, said: “ I have not got to alter anything I have said.” He was referring particularly to his previously expressed opinion on the Order-in-Council empowering the Government to suspend the authority of the Waterside Industry Commission, and incorporated in the Government’s ultimatum. On that occasion Mr Barnes said: “If Mr Fraser wishes to challenge the industrial movement as he evidently does, our union will very much regret the challenge, but will be compelled to accept it. Mr Fraser has apparently chosen to line up on the side of big business against the workers, and in my opinion the workers will make his position quite clear. Deplorable though the situation is, I believe the workers will not run away from Mr Fraser’s challenge." Mr Barnes refused to comment further.
