PLUNGE INTO RIVER

RESCUE AT BRIGHTON CONSTABLE’S PROMPT ACTION When two young girls were in danger of drowning at Brighton on Monday afternoon Constable C. S. Brittenden, who was on patrol duty, divested himself of his tunic and jersey and plunged into the river, and his prompt action saved at least one, and possibly both of the girls from drowning. The girls, Eileen Graham, aged nine, and Rhona Shaw, aged 11, both of Green Island, were bathing between the bridge and the beach. Screams attracted the attention of the constable and a small boy informed him of the plight of the girls. The constable was able to bring Rhona Shaw to safety, but the other girl had drifted to the opposite bank. By this time several visitors had joined in the rescue operations and Mr Shaw was able to drag his daughter to safety There was a large crowd of visitors at Brighton at the time and Constable Brittenden’s prompt action came in for the highest commendation.
