Outstanding Games Superlative golf by Shaw against Murray'in the professional final and a titanic struggle over 36 holes by Glading and Woon in. the quarter final of the Amateur Championships were the features of the seventh day of the New Zealand Championship meeting. There were other notable games, but tne Glac.-ing-Wood match, which provided the best golf of the tournament, was classic. It finished on the thirty-sixth green when Woon missed a short putt. The game was followed by a large gallery. Glading won the third and Woon squared the tally with a 2 at the fourth, but lost the next two holes. Both were playing brilliant golf. The cards were:— Glading: 4,4, 4,3, 5. 4, 5. 3, 3,-35. Woon; 4. 4, 5. 2.6, 5, 5. 3, 3,-37. Glading thrilled the spectators when he holed out from a bunker at the tenth. At the next, Woon rolled down a long putt. They were one under par for the next four holes. Woon lost the seventeenth, and when they went on to the eighteenth tee Glading required a 3 for 69. The cards in read:—.; > . Glading: 3,4, 3, 5. 4,4, 4,4, 5-36-total, 71. Woon: 5,3, 3,4, 4,4, 4,5, 4—36total, 73. In the afternoon the most brilliant golf of the tournament was seen. When the match finished the green was ringed with spectators. The result depended upon the last putt, which Glading sunk after Woon had missed one just a fraction longer. Woon was unlucky. He hit a better second, but the ball pitched in a shallow bunker and rolled close to the outside edge. Woon missed his putt on the second in the afternoon, to be 3 down. Glading missed one on the next, and they were square at the sixth. The figures out were:—

Glading: 4,4, 5,3, 5,5, 5,3, 3—37. Woon:. 4,5, 5,3, 3, 4,.5, 3, 5—36. Woon was one down at the turn, but squared the match with a 3 at the tenth. Glading was down in 3 to win the eleventh, and he won the long thirteenth with a birdie. Woon squared the match again with wins at the fourteenth and sixteenth. At the seventeenth they played two of the greatest shots of the match. Playing his first to the green, Woon lay six feet to the left of the hole, and Glading replied with one which finished less than four feet away-to the right. Both sank their putts. Glading won the last hole, and his aggregate for the day was. 144 to Woon’s 145. Murray’s Hard Fight Shaw was 1 up at the turn in the morning, and both played excellent golf. Murray’s only bad shot was one which put him into a bunker at the third. From the trap he played a masterly shot to halve. At the long hole Murray was not far past the flag with his third, and Shaw was about eight feet away. Murray was dead for an easy 5, and Shaw’s putt hit the back of the hole and stayed out. Shaw won the seventh and Murray the eighth, and Shaw holed a 10-footer for a win in 2at the ninth. The cards read:—

Shaw: 4,4, 4,3, 5,5, 4,4, 2-35. Murray: 4,4, 4,3, 5,5, 5,3, 3—36,

Murray missed a short putt for a half at the twelfth and with Murray 3 down, the fifteenth was halved in birdie 4’s, and he was in the bunker to lose the sixteenth. All the time Shaw was putting for birdies, but at the seventeenth he missed a four footer and Murray got one back. Murray was on the back of the home green with his second and Shaw was in front of the pin. Murray’s approach shot left him a long putt which he missed, shaw being 4 up. The cards read:

Shaw: 5,4, 3,5, 4,4, 4,5, 4—38. Total 77. Murray: 5,4, 4,5, 5,4, 5,4, 5—41. Total 73.

When the game was resumed Murray suffered another loss at the first green. They halved the next in par figures, but a birdie 3 by Shaw increased his lead to six at the third. At the long hole he sank his putt for a birdie 4 and. was 7 up. At the next it was Murray who turned on the fireworks with a brilliant eagle 3. They halved Riverside in 4’s and the ninth, where Shaw was' six up. Their cards out read: ' r , Shaw: 4,4, 3,3, 4,5, 4,4, 3—34. Murray: 5,4, 4,3, 5,3, 4,4, 3—35.

The next hole was halved in par 4’s and Murray got one back with a par 4 to 5 at the eleventh. He put one out of bounds at the thirteenth and that was where Shaw clinched the match 6 and 5.
