TEN YEAR PLAN
TARANAKI PROVINCE (P.A.) WANGANUI, Oct. 21. The regeneration of hundreds of square miles of deteriorated land in the back country is the main feature of the Wanganui-Taranaki 10-year plan announced by the Minister of Works. Mr Semple, this morning'. This hinterland, which the Minister described as New Zealand's “problem country,” extends through the King Country, Taranaki and Wanganui, and icnludes many thousands of acres which have been allowed to fall out of production and much of which is affected by volcanic action of other years. Mr Semple promised brain-power, man-power and money to find the solution. Hand in hand with this regeneration scheme is the Minister’s declaration of war on erosion in the huge area between the Rangitikei and Mangawhero Rivers, extending from the coast inland as far as Ohakune, and including the watersheds of the Wangaehu and Turakina Rivers. The land development also includes the stabilisation of the dune country from Wanganui south. Sand stabilisation is also among the extensive harbour works proposed for Wanganui.
