IMPORT LICENCES
NO EXTENSIONS LIKELY (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 3. The Government would not consider any extension of 1946 licences beyond March 31 next, and in all likelihood 1947 licences would expire on December 31, 1947. This information was given to a meeting to-day of the council of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce by Mr W. H. Hindle. The Government, he said, wanted to be able to take stock of the position and see what calls were likely on its exchange resources at a given date, a thing it had not been able to do before. Mr Barton Ginger said that if the Government clamped down on Decern ber 31, 1947, probably only about twothirds of the licences would be used. The whole licensing system at the moment was in a state of chaos.
