OTAKI CANDIDATES

FINAL GALLOPS AT TRENTHAM (Special) WELLINGTON, Oct. 3. A solid performance over a mile by Flahuluk was .a feature of the work at Trentham this morning when candidates for the Otakl meeting were given their final trials. The weather was showery and the track was boggy in several places, the going being the worst experienced for some time. These conditions suited Flahuluk, who.hit out freely and finished on well. Flahuluk (Ford) was accompanied by Rivervlew (B. McDonald). They jumped oil at the nine furlongs and were well into their stride passing the mile. They ran to the half mile in 52 4-ssec, which was a little better than the average time for half miles to-day, and it took Flahuluk 57sec to come home the last half mile, making lmin 49 4-ssec for the full distance. Rivervlew was in distress soon after turning for home and Flahuluk, not ridden out went on to win by six lengths. Both horses are candidates for the Ling Memorial Stakes at Otaki on Saturday Flahuluk has worked soundly singe staging an overdue return to the winning list at Carterton, and he should race prominently in his engagement to-morrow. Master Dash and Master Robin worked about six furlongs the reverse way in view of a possible trip to Ayckland next week. Master Dash is to have his first race of the season at Otaki, but in the event of bad going he would be an unlikely starter. Caithness (Searle) ran seven furlongs in lmin 38 l-ssec. She picked up Flying Swan (Tattersall) at the five furlongs and together they ran the last half mile in 56 2-ssec. Caithness worked much better than she did on Tuesday. Zealander (Ford) v and Hormuz (Biggs) ran three furlongs smartly in 38 2-ssec. Zealander worked particularly well. He is in two races at Otaki and most likely will run in the sprint. This will be his first appearance in public since June. Typhoon (Tattersall) was going easily beside Sea Fury (Taylor) at the end of half a mile in 54sec the last three in 39 4-ssec. Sea Fury did not relish the sticky ground. Tutere (Biggs) covered seven furlongs, with the pace increased over the last four in 54 2-ssec, and the last three in 40sec. Tutere has two engagements at Otaki tomorrow and no announcement has been made about his programme. Lord Darnley (Gough) came home the last three furlongs of his work in 39sec, and Salut d’Amour (Ford) did a similar task soundly, his last three taking 38 4-ssec. Royal Baron (Ford) began too smartly for Campanella (Harding) and led him easily throughout half a mile in 53 4-ssec. High Order (Ryan) was a length in front of Montosorrie (Lockyer), with Marshall Cook (Anderson) half a length away at the end of seven furlongs in lmin 37 4-ssec, the first three in 40sec, and the last three in 42 4-ssec.
