PUBLIC TRANSPORT
GOVERNMENT’S' POLICY ANNOUNCEMENT BY MINISTER (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 1. The following eight major points ot the Government’s future transport policy were announced by the Minister of Transport, Mr O’Brien, last night:— 1 Construction of modern transport facilities best suited to meet the needs of national production, standards or life, and defence. 2. Development of public roads and passenger services so that adequate cheap travel is available to all for both ; essential and recreational purposes. 3. Provision of road freight services ' so that prompt and cheap collection and delivery services for all classes of goods are. available throughout the : country. . 4 Public ownership and operation oi i road transport services in cases where such is necessary and desirable in the public interest. ' , , _ 5. Co-ordination of all forms of pudlic transport. . 6. Preservation to the individual ol the unrestricted right to own and operate his own means of transport foi private domestic use. 7. A comprehensive and progressive road safety policy. . 8 All inventions and discoveries o science in the field of transport shall be made available to attain an evei < higher standard of life.
