OCTAGON THEATRE

ACTION AND ROMANCE One of the finest screen spectacles of the year, ” The Spanish Main,” shown in technicolor, and starring Paul Helnreid, Maureen O’Hara, and Walter Slazak, had its first screening at the Octagon Theatre yesterday. Crammed with thrilling action and a story romance against the picturesque background of Caribbean pirate days, the film is a brilliantly satisfying entertainment. The exploits of a Dutch merchant captain who turns pirate to avenge himself on the Spaniards for the brutal enslaving of his crew are vividly depicted. As a crowning blow to the arrogant Spanish governor, the Hollander captures a galleon bearing the governors intended bride to Cartagena, and marries her himself. Other pirates, fearing disastrous reprisals, conspire to double-cross their associate and take the lady back to Cartagena. What happens makes up the suspense-packed conclusion as the daring Hollander sets forth on a singlehanded invasion of Spain’s new-world capital to win back his bride. Box plans are at the theatre and Begg’s.
