REARNG OF PHEASANTS
EXCHANGE WITH AUCKLAND IMPROVING THE STRAIN The value of the Otago Acclimatisation Society’s programme of pheasant breeding and liberation has been enhanced by the fact that an exchange of cock birds has been arranged with the Auckland Acclimatisation Society. The secretary of the Otago Society, Mr L. Millar, said yesterday that birds from Auckland were expected to arrive in Dunedin shortly. This should help materially to improve the strain of the birds being bred at the game farm, and should produce a better bird for sporting purposes and reduce the possibilities of in-breeding. There has been a gbod response from individuals desiring eggs for breeding birds for liberation in their own districts, and the pamphlet giving instructons in the breding of these birds is being printed for distribution next month.
A greater coverage of the district will be possible as a result of private individuals breeding birds, and it is considered that this will consderably increase the popularty of pheasant shooting, because on liberation the birds should quickly find a habitat to their liking. It has been found in several parts of the district in which pheasants have been liberated that clutches of young birds have reached maturity.
